Trying to build Server...

I have an ATX COMPAQ 370A MOTHERBOARD AND PENT.III 733 CPU that I am currently pulling my hair out over. I bought a PSU brand name is POWORK and it is PW 500. It is supposed to support the Pent 3 and 4 boards. My led light in the front of the case is lighting up but the fans on the PSU are not running. When the power button is pressed nothing happens. I am trying to understand why there is no power to the rest of the board. Could it be that it is the wrong PSU? Anyone with a possible solution, I would like to hear about it. Can't boot the computer to see anything such as Bios and all that. If I could find the ser # on the board I would give it to you. This is the first time I am building something like this and really need the help!! All suggestions welcome!!!!

Could possibly be a lot of different things happening.

If you installed the motherboard in the case yourself did you make sure that the bottom of the motherboard was not touching the metal of the case?

Did you check to make sure everything is fully seated in their slots or sockets? i.e. video cards and/or ram puched in all the way? CPU fully seated in it's sockets? PSU connectors pushed all the way in firmly?

Could be a malfucntion of the PSU. Do you have another PSU you could swap to test? If so, try that PSU in another system and try the PSU from the other system in this one.

Try connecting the bare minimum. Just connect the CPU, ram and video card. Boot up and see what happens form there.

Could even be things that I haven't mentioned here. Give a full discription of all that you've done and maybe someone else can add to this.

Yeah, a number of things could really be happening. You'll just have to test some stuff out. And make sure to provide one of those extremely lengthy lists of details.

That way, not just Rico Mania and myself would be helping ya out.

Later dude.

I am getting power to the board but i think that the pin configuration is wrong and i need to get the right one. the # i am using to pull up on Google is 187498-001 and also 010630-101. I called a company and he said that the pin config is off being a compaq and using a different PSU. I bought a connector converter that would convert a 20 pin to a 24 pin. I think that there is an issue and once that is figured out all should be fine.
I did seat everything in the right spots and the back of the board was not touching metal. I tried a different PSU and i got the same response. Just the green LED light was lit up on the front. The cooling fan does not even run or the fans on the PSU for that matter!

Can anyone help me out with finding a manual for this MoBo? if so let me know....thanks!

I'm not sure but I think I read somewhere that Compaq motherboards are not compatible with most other PSU's only Compaq's PSU's. Could be wrong but I think that's what I read. If I run across that info again I come back and post it for you.

Take care

Your probably thinking of Dell, they are one of the only manufacturers that I know who pulled that stupid stunt of rewiring the ATX connector from the power supply to the motherboard. Compaq, as far as I know, has never done that.

I called Compaq and tried to beat some people on getting some simple answers and the only one i got was one. In this Compaq Deskpro AP23 with a # of 187498-001 there are 15 different Deskpro models and all of them use a PSU with watt of 90 - 120. If anyone can gather more info in regards to this i would appreciate it very much. As far as the pin config they keep on asking for the Ser # of the machine and I do not have that. So, it may be something along those lines but not sure. Will try to dig a little deeper and see what I can get!!!

I'd start with unplugging all the non-essential items as suggested before. I saw a computer one time that had a really strange problem like that too. Turned out that it wouldnt start at all for some reason if the Front-USB header was connected to the board (I'm guessing the pin configuration on the case plug didnt match the pin configuration on the motherboard).

Unhappy

I have tried to put in a different PSU that was lower in watts and the same thing happened. The fans on the PSU are not turning. The second PSU is a working PSU from a different machine. I installed the board myself and do not recolect the board touching the back of the case. I am still getting power to the board but not to the specifics. I have all plugs plugged in the correct way, ram is pushed all the way in, PSU plugs are in all the way. Anyone with other solutions? Please let me know!!!
