| Problem with computer spontaneously shutting down
I have a problem with my computer spontaneously shutting itself down. It can go a couple of days without shutting itself down and other times, it's every five minutes. The little LED at the front of the computer stays on, but the big blue power button won't activate unless I unplug the computer for a few seconds. It doesn't seem to be heat related, because it sometimes does it when it hasn't been running for a while and then it will stay on for days at other times. I also have anti-virus and anti-spyware protections on my computer, so I don't think that's the problem. It's gotten worse these last couple of days, and this morning it kept cutting off before it would even complete booting. I'm thinking that it might be a loose connection somewhere because it has cut off a couple of times when I bumped the computer (not too hard, though). Any ideas of where I should look? |

Open that thing up and check all the connections. Also check the capacitors for any leakers while your in there. Does it give any warnings, or does it just instantly shut down? What motherboard do you have? |

Welcome to TechIMO!!
Doubt if anything is loose unless you've been in there tinkering around.
But you might just open it up and re-secure all of the connections.
Also check the CPU fan and make sure it's not plugged with dust. Bill

I'm not sure but perhaps the power supply unit is going bad.

It's a HP Pavilion a305w, and I haven't opened it up or tinkered with it yet. I can't figure out if it's the power supply, the motherboard, or a loose connection somewhere in between. The fact that the LED on the front stays on makes me think that it may not be the power supply. |

Did you get this at Wal~Mart?
If so, I think you may have a Samsung drive.
Should tell you in the BIOS.
Try running their diagnostic program on the disk to see if it tests OK. Disk Manager & Software Downloads - All Manufacturers
You'll need to set the boot order to floppy first.

I think my wife did get this at Walmart while I was deployed. Is there an issue with Samsung drives that causes computers to shut down? If so, how does that happen?
