Makes me wonder if there is a hard drive head grinding into a platter?

Sorry brain dead, if it was a hard drive head grinding on the platter you would be having more issues, but it could be a bearing in the hard drive. Try unplugging the hard drive then turn it on see if it still makes that noise.

PS's fan bearings going bad... most folks would just plan to buy a new PS asap.... a few folks here would take a shot at replacing the fan, but working with the PS -- even though unplugged -- can be dangerous as the capacitors hold strong charges for a loooonngg time, so you need to be real careful.

My post was in response to the thread starter. And besides, why would anyone replace a "PC" if a fan went bad?
