Computer conversion
***firstly i would like to thank evryone on this site everyone is so very helpful and have gotten me through a lot of problems but have def learned a few things along the way thanks***
ok here's the deal, i have a desktop comp running windows xp home edition, and now i am getting a laptop, i have alot of software on my desktop how do i get it installed onto my notebook if i don't have the cd's that came with the software ? is there a way to do it if so how ?
also would there be any benefit to keeping the desktop connected at all i mean can i hook the tower from my desktop to my router, would there be any purpose ? would it be able to be accessed from my notebook and what would be a reason i would want to do that
ok so i know i'm goin on and hopefully i'm making sense but i want to see if i could utilize my desktop as some sort of extra drive or something don't know if there is a point to do so, but i def want to get some programs off the desktop and have them on the laptop and i don't have the cd's
help pleaseLast edited by djm1k0; March 30th, 2005 at 01:13 AM.

You could just transfer the files and place shortcuts to the executables on the desktop, or wherever you like to access programs from, but that gets real messy if you ask me, and some programs won't work like that, expecialy if you have to patch a game or something similar, becuase there is no "real" instal path in registry like a "history" of instaling it.
XP does have the File and Tettings Transfer Wizard, but I have never touched it, just saw it on my programs menu once. I don't think that would accomplish it though, the title makes it sound like it would only transfer raw files like music and photos, or preffrences.
So I don't really think there is a way, but maybe someone will bring something up I didn't realise.
Good luck, but why don't you have the CD's, and if you don't have the CD's, they should be free programs of the internet or programs you have a licence for... legaly...
But I'm not saying eveything on my computer is... ya know... hehe..........

Might want to clean up that post... Take your stuff out of my quote, it kinda makes you look like your posing me or something, or like your being a dick by doing so. But yeah... Like I said that is the only way I know how.
Edit- Thanks for cleaning it up

March 30th, 2005, 01:50 AM #6Yeah I knew you were not being a dick or posting anything offencive, I was just saying to edit it becuase to some people it would look that way. Some people think they are funny and go and edit someones post to make it look like they said it and stuff, and some people would interprit your post that way. I'm just making sure noone thinks you are someone that would mean anything bad, hehe.
