| Canon BJC-80 printer problems
I have an old Canon BJC-80 printer connected to my laptop via a parallel port to USB adapter cable. It has been working fine for some time. But now I get a VERY long delay before it prints (i. e. MINUTES). It shows as properly installed and configured as the default printer in control panel. I can successfully print a test page, but there was a 5 minute delay before printing! I have uninstalled the printer and reinstalled it without change, even after rebooting the laptop. The laptop is running XP with all updates. The printer installs automatically when plugged in.
Any help would be appreciated. Canon's website has not helped so far... |

In the BIOS what type of printer is selected? It may have choices like Standard, Bi-directional, ECP etc. What is yours set to? |

Hi Meese,
BIOS reads ECP. But understand that the laptop has no parallel port connector. Hence the adapter cable "parallel -port-to-USB". When looking in properties under this printer in the control panel, it shows the printer connected to "Virtual printer port for USB" |

Hi John,
I did the XP troubleshooter. I ended up changing to "Print directly to the printer" instead of using spooling. That appears to have cured the problem, but I'll be darned if I understand why.
Thanks for caring, guys. Have a great day! |

Spooling is like streaming video... But I may be spooling myself. |

I spoke too soon... even with spooling off, there are extended delays printing, at least part of the time. I don't get it. |

That'll be because the Windows spooling system has grown itself a problem - for example due to residue temporary files that it needs to dig through every time you want to print. |

Hi Peter,
I have yet to see a Windows problem you couldn't cure...
In Win98, I might have searched for *.tmp and deleted everything that came up. I'm not comfortable with that idea in XP. Any suggestions? |
