Have you considered a viral infection?
A hardware/mechanical problem would seem much more random.
I don't know why it would return to the same spot unless instructed to.

Have you checked to see if "Snap to" is enabled in Mouse Properties, Pointer Options? This might be why it's constantly jumping back to the Start button, as elroy mentioned.

hmm...i'll have to check those last 2...they sound reasonable. I don't think it's viral, he was running norton (up to date) and then we switched to avg (also up to date) and microsoft anti-spyware beta. i don't think he's badly infected. I don't think it's his desk/mouse pad (whatever he's using) because it works perfectly sometimes. i could be wrong and i'll bring mine to make sure but i really don't think so. thanks for the ideas though..i'll try em out. Thanks

mouse crazy fix for vista..if u gt a tablet pc laptop

just try turn off the tablet pc options from turns windows features off..it solved my problem....i don knw...my tablet pc drivers might be conflicting with mouse drivers nd creating thishavoc..so i tuned off my tablet ..nw its all fine but i m nt able to use tablet feature though i had no use ofit..ill buy a new xternal tablet pad if smday ill nedd..they gt better precision nd cmes very cheap
