Latest edition of UK magazine Personal Computer World June 2005 has a half page article on pg 37. It states in its CeBIT review that release is imminent. It will only be XP Pro initially with media centre and tablet versions to follow.

Itwill only be available for purchase with a PC. So no upgrade for existing systems, but you should be able to buy a copy along with components to build your own system. It will need new 64 bit drivers, 32 bit ones won't work, but current 32 bit code (not containing 16 bit) will still run. No price was quoted.

How well do 32bit applications run on this new os? Do you get any performance boost even if you don't have 64bit applications? I'v heard that there are alot of problems with it being compatable with hardware and drivers even though many companies have already released 64bit versions. Has anyone tried it yet? What did you find?

    $700 bucks.. c'mon..

Windows 2003 server only costs $1300.

Also owners of XP Pro (bought and not OEM or bundled with a system (no home ed or upgrade of XP Pro)) will be able to upgrade to XP 64 for free.

PCW article claims "XP64 happily runs 32 bit code ... Some 32 bit applications will even run faster, taking advantage of 64 bit registers ... but you will see little difference in standard Office applications"

its not an upgrade its a trade.

you hand back your 32 bit licence. you get a 64 bit one. personally i'd wait before doing that. then you need a fresh install cos its a whole different os.

the $700 ws the cheapest package available to msdn subscribers when xp 64 went rtm at the end of march (afaik). There ere as yet no plans for a retail version of xp 64, but oems and system builders will be able to sell it with a piece of hardware. i don't think it'll be much more expensive than xp (thats just my opinion from reading between the lines here and there)

25 april is the date, at a big bash in seattle. msft gave an open invite to the first 64 voluteers from the cpp newsgroup.

there will be a free trial download available soon for xp 64 (possibly on the 25th) word on da streets is that the trial will last for 180 days................

most of the essential 64 bit drivers are availble. but if you want 64 bit drivers for that usb web cam or digicam........no. not yet anyway.

95% of the 32 bit apps i tried work fine with xp 64 (from beta through to rc2) noteable exceptions are av and firewalls..........although bitdefender pro and macafee virusscan enterprise 8.0 do work. Its said that 32 bit apps that require "kernel drivers" will not run on xp 64.............

i'd still like to see a true 64 bt app run with this os, a game demo........a media player...... some office apps, ps 64 ..........

it allows you to run a computer with a 64bit data path.

ie your processor can now handle twice the effective data coming in/out.

ie in theory double the speed "in theory"

64 bit processors have been out for months now, but the operating systems that can actually take advantage of the chips has been lacking (win server 2003 being the only one for some time I believe)

So anyone that bought a dell with a 64bit chip with there std. OEM winXp haven't been able to take advantage and hardly anyone was the wiser.

anyone running a 32 bit chip (Athlon XP, Pentium 4 and down) shouldn't bother because the OS won't run properly. Hence you won't notice the speed boost, if it will install at all.

Man, they had better not charge $700. If they do, I ain't going to buy it. I'll stay with XP Home.
