safe mode screen
I am having a problem, everytime the pc boots up it goes into the screen where you pick a choice (safe mode, sade mode with command prompt, start windows with the last known working configuration) When I pick any one of these choice, it goes into the screen with windows xp logo and back to these choices. it is not letting me go into any of these choices. Please help

Are you able to get into safe mode at all? Or are you basically locked out?

Try the XP repair option. Insert your XP disc before you start up and follow the instructions.
Make sure you have it set to boot from the CDrom drive.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE9TN...eature=related

The repair option is the first way to go. Once you're in Windows though, run a virus scan and a spyware scan if possible. Here's a decent guide for doing a repair install.
If that's not the solution:
Do you have high-speed internet or know someone that does? If you do, I can upload a file for you that will really make this easier. It's really big (about 600MB) so it would take weeks to download on dial-up.
If you don't have high-speed interent, you'll need the Windows install CD. Also, what version do you have (I'm assuming it's WinXP)? And do you have a virus scanner and a spyware scanner installed?"Be quiet, Brain, or I'll stab you with a Q-tip"

ok I went into the bios to set it up to boot from cd rom, and this is how the boot looks like
1.IDE Hard Drive [Maxtor 4D080H4]
2.Removable Device [Floppy Disk]
3.Atapi Cd Rom [CD writer cd16e]
4 Other Boot Device [Int18 Device Net]
Which one of these do I change to boot from cd? I already try number 1, and thats not it

You need to get "Atapi Cd Rom [CD writer cd16e]" as the primary (1st) boot device. Then you can boot from the CD.

Ok I did the window repair, and was able to repair window. When it goes to the desktop I get a message that say
Run time error 91 object variable or with block not set
I don't know what that means. I am able to click on any icon, and it opens up that window. The only thing that I am unable to do is click on the start button. When ever I try to click on the start buttom the pointer is busy.

Alright, try booting into safe-mode (by hitting F8 before Windows starts loading). Download CodeStuff Starter, run it, and uncheck everything.
Then check out this site (thanks to sr71000) and use the majority of the programs listed under "Anti-Spyware Programs" (specifically MS AntiSpyware, and AdAware, and a-squared). And you may want to also run a virus scan. If you don't have a virus scanner, AVG and avast! are good, free ones.
After that's all done, install ServicePack 2 (unless your install CD already has SP2)."Be quiet, Brain, or I'll stab you with a Q-tip"

I was able to do all this, but the pointer is still busy when ever I click on the start button. I am able to click on any icon with no problem except the start button. What can I do?

Hmmm... I really don't know what's wrong. I did some searching and found this:
Posted here in regard to a similar problem. And here's basically the same thing from the MS Knowledge Base. The hourglass over taskbar problem is XP is usually the result of the SSDP Discovery Service. This service searches for universal plug and play devices on the network. In the task manager processes list, the SSDP service shows as svchost.exe. To eliminate the problem, disable the SSDP service using the administrative tools of control panel. If you can't get to control panel, right click the my computer icon on your desktop and select manage. From there select services and applications and services.
The SSDP service is probably looping because TCP/IP is corrupted. That's why you can't access the internet or email. See document 817571 in the Microsoft knowledge base for instructions on fixing TCP/IP. It is actually quite simple to fix. You just have to delete the winsock sections of the registry and re-install the TCP/IP protocol. The Microsoft instructions are pretty good.
I don't know if that helps at all."Be quiet, Brain, or I'll stab you with a Q-tip"

have you run an anti-virus yet? I'd strongly recommend ms anti-spyware beta and any of the anti-virus listed on my site (as provided by large nostril
) or one of the two he's recommended. also...you could try posting a hijack this log here and see what people find.
btw...this is the first time i've seen my website linked to by someone besides myself
lol. woot woot
good luck w/ u'r problem...let us know if you get it fixed up!

. And I think I saw somebody else link it as well.

Won a cheap audio compressor on eBay, and received a digital room relay. :heh: Seller had the room delay for auction as well, so I suspect its winner received my compressor. ;) Now...
