Excel 2003 won't open Excel 2000 files (?)

Our network server has several Excel files that were created using Excel 2000. These files will open directly from the server on our workstations that have Excel 2000, but two of our workstations now house Office 2003, and we are unable to open these files. We can see the network, see the actual file on the server, and if we copy it to our desktops, we can open the file, but we cannot open it directly from the server.

Any ideas and/or solutions?!

Thanks!

Kyle

What OS is on the server? If you have W2K3 server, SP1 just came out and fixes a few issues with excel. Do you use DFS?

Our server is actually about 5 or 6 years old (and will be replaced soon), running NT Server. If we even try to access just the server itself through any of the office 2003 applications (Word, Excel, etc.), the window just closes and will not allow me to even open the server. If I go directly to the server via My Computer, I can see everything, but I cannot open it (the program will launch, but the file will not open).
