| Computer Completly freezes
Hi, lately everynow and then my computer will completly freeze up, even on the key board when I press caps lock, Num lock, or scroll lock the lights on it wont change. I end up having to turn my computer off improperly to get it working. It hasent happened in a while but did once today. Normally it only happens a short while after the computer has started and if the computer runs fine for a good while then it just wont happen.
Someone suggested that it may be because my computer is an XP and there is a 2000 that is used for bussiness on my network, and the 2000 is making the XP do that, but I dont believe that is true. Instead I think it may be a power source problem in the computer or one of the fans may not be working properly. One reason I believe that power is the problem is because whenever I try to run a dvd in my computer, after a few minutes it will shut down as if its not getting enough power to play the DVD. Maybe could it be a virus?
Well if anyone knows what may be wrong and/ or know a way to fix it please tell me. Also, is there maybe a way I can find out how much power is being sent to my computer and if its enough? Haha, if anyone could help me with both problems, the Freezing and DVD problem that would be great, thank you. |

Can you provide the computer manufacturer and all other pertinent details? If you don't know, you can download this program Everest Home and browse through the details.
You might also want to download Ad Aware SE and Spybot. See this KC computer Links for some program ideas. |

use the EverestHome program to monitor your temps and voltage values...
take the side off your case and look at the sticker on the side of the power supply, (top back corner)
tell us the brand name, max wattage and the number of Amps on the +12V rail... |

idk, though, i had the same problem with my pc that had a p2 running at 233 with 98se. and by the looks of a lot of programs they recomend a minimum of 266. but just to rule out any other things i removed all of the prefrial cards like the modem, nic, wireless, 2nd hard drive, 2nd, disc drive. and none of that helped it out. so i finally got around to oc'ing it with softfsb up to 280 and it has not froze to date. |

C'mon guys, do you really think you have enough information to provide an intelligent suggestion on how to fix the problem? Do we know if maybe he's getting a BSOD but it happens so fast and restarts he misses it or just didn't mention it? Do we know that he's not running a 500 watt super duper power supply?
What we do know is he's running W2K and on occasion his computer locks up. We know that when running a DVD, the PC restarts (everytime????) and we know that he's on some sort of a network. |

Sorry JrsWeger for the lack of info, heh, it was late. Right now im at school so im currently unable to post my stats. But yes whenever i try to play a DVD my computer shuts down and restarts.
Ive also got 2 harddrives on my computer and I used Everest to find out the temp and it said that the one with 200 Gigs was about 50-54 degrees Celsius and my original with 40 Gigs was in the 30's i think. I was wondering if it is alright for a drive to be in the 50's.
When I get home im going to post the stats that I cannot here, haha, so hopefully someone will still be around to help me. Thanks for the help so far and here are the stats that I currently know:
OS: Windows XP
Manufacturer/ Model: HP Pavilon
1.5 ... i think, Pentium 4
Unfortunatly at the moment i cant think of anything else that i kno of that would be usefull, im sure there is something, but like i said, im going to post my Stats from Everest when i get home. |
