my friend swears someone is messing her computer up by hacking through her labtech webcam. she usually uses yahoo messenger and sometimes msn, to webcam with people. she stays on a major college campus apt with lan. she's running windows xp. windows ICF was not turned on. this problem existed before and after a fresh windows xp install.
is this possible, to have your computer hacked through webcams?
the problems she experienced were "things acting funny", leading to not booting, cycling from post to windows starting screen, repeatedly.

The most common problem we have had on our campus was people turning on other peoples webcam to watch people while in their room without them knowning it . They were not hacking into peoples computers via the web cam but rather hacking in to use the web cam. I guess its possible to a cam program to have ports open and make it easier for someone to get in but that doesnt sound right. |

there was a guy a couple of months ago who made a trojan to spy on a girls webcam. he was busted because he accidently sent the pictures to her. What a moron. Saying that its possible, but slim.
I suggest installing some anti virus software and firewall software to limit the connections to the pc. Update them and do a scan.
Sounds more like a user error with windows than someone hacking the computer |

when the computer was not booting correctly (before this new fresh install), she was able to boot into safe mode/w /networking. however, programs that connected to the internet (firefox, iexplorer) and antivir programs would shut down, right after starting up.
could she have just had a virus? |

| Very likely. Even spyware can do this to a system (they can also stop Windows from being able to load). Run several different spyware and virus scans and get the system cleaned out would be my advice. Then get a firewall in place.

I understand Google has a "secret" address of all wireless web cams which are using he default password.
I heard it on a computer geek show, but he didn't give it out...

Hmm I thought it was M$ that had that, that way they could tell what everyone else in the world is doing?
Amos you might look at the thread creation dates before posting a reply, this is a three y/o thread with the last action being a random bump last year.
