PC not detecting CD/DVD drives

I am having a problem. I looked at my dads PC about a week ago and decided to reformat it. After the reformat it started to freeze at the'checking NVRAM' part. As well as this, following a couple of restarts both drives, a cdrw and a dvd, disappeared out of 'My Computer'. I cleared the CMOS which appears to have sorted out the freezing at the NVRAM but the drives are still missing. Can anyone give me some advice?

You'll need to give us more info to better help you. What mobo are you using? Are they optical drives connected to an add-in controller or to the mobo? Have you reinstalled the drivers for your ATA controllers?

This can usually be fixed by deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry. You can find instructions on how to do this here:

I don't know what sort of mobo it is, i can't find anything on it to say. The opticals are connected directly onto it. I tried the solution posted here, but i still can't see any drives in 'My Computer', all i can see is the HD and the floppy. Any more ideas?
