| Computer keeps shutting down
I installed a new DFI KT600-AL board into an old case I have. I can get the system to post, but when I try to install an OS it turns itself off. The strange thing is that the light on my mouse stays lit and the number lock key light is lit. Also there is a diode on the motherboard that stays lit.
The cpu and the cooling fans stop working. The hard drive led goes blank. My monitor goes black, the light goes from green to yellow. I can't repower on. I have to let it set for awhile. Then try it again, it posts and goes to install Window then shuts down again.
What could be causing this? Is it the cpu overheating? Or can it be the power supply. The heatsink is on tightly and I applied thermal paste to it.

Short maybe?
Try removing the MB, place on a anti-static surface, and boot from there to eleiminate that possibility.

The new mobo must have power on via mouse and keyboard enabled. It powers the mouse and keyboard using the +5V standby while the rest of the computer is off.
The on-board LED is also probably powered via the +5V standby, just to remind you that it's plugged in.
Did you reformat and reinstall windows when you installed your new mobo? Windows often acts funny when you do a mobo swap. It's better to reformat and reinstall windows when changing mobos. |

That seems to be the solution Bill. Installing OS now and the comp does not shut down. Wish I'd have asked here before I brought a new power supply. Brought a CoolMax400 from NewEgg for 30 bucks.
Well, it's always good to have a backup. Thanks for the advice.

Spoke too soon, it shut down again while install WinMe. Could it be the cpu over heating? Or a motherboard defect?

It could be the power supply. I've seen how cheap and light CompUSA branded PSU's are. I would try a known good one of better quality to rule out the PSU. It may have performed fine with older, lower power products, but it could be overstressed with the new mobo+CPU. |
