| Maxtor 80B external hard drive not working
My one-year-old 80 GB Maxtor external HD suddenly stopped working yesterday.
My PC seemed to go on the blink as well (wouldn't start up after re-booting), but all was OK again when I disconnected the Maxtor and re-started the computer.
When I plug the Maxtor back in however it simply makes a 'click' noise every few seconds and an orange light flashes. The drive (L) doesn't show up at all in my computer.
Can anyone advise? Thanks!

Welcome to techIMO
when you plug in the HD (i'm assuming USB?) does windows recognise that there is something plugged into the USB port (does it make that cool ding-ding sound) or is the drive just ignored completely? |

iwish, half an hour ago I at least got a pop-up message to say that a new storage device had been detected. But now when I plug the Maxtor into the PC it's completely ignored. And no click and no orange flashing light. Only the green 'On' light.

That sounds suspiciously like what my external hard drive did when it quit. It had a Samsung hard drive in it, but that's just about exactly what mine did. With relatively little warning, it started reading and writing very slowly, and then essentially quit altogether leaving me with pretty much the same symptoms that you are describing.
I took the drive out of the external enclosure and attempted to connect it internally as a secondary drive in my PC itself, but sadly I still have a hard drive that just makes funny noises and lots of data on it.

like loctite said with his, try plugging it internaly.
other than that, try hooking it up to another computer (if Avail) and see what it does.

sounds like your hard drive died. I asked what the clicking sound was one day in class, and the teacher said "that's the sound of the arm going back and forth looking for the partition information/ file table information. If it can't find the information because of a read error or other problem it scans the whole drive back and forth real fast banging into the stop on the way back each time. " |

What is your operating system?...Win9x or 2k/xp?
I use Win98se and Win2k in a dual boot...recently, while in Win98 I wanted some data from my external setup (with an 80 gig Maxtor)...it acted much like yours and I figured the USB setup or Hard drive had failed.
I booted into Win2k and it worked just fine. I still have been unable to get it back under Win98...I think I may need to reinstall thew drivers for the add on USB card and possibly the external enclosure.
Don't write it off as dead just yet.
