| USB drive detection in Win98
Hello,
I have a USB to IDE external hard drive case which holds a IDE hdd and plugs into a pc via a usb cable. It works fine with WInxp and shows it as removable device H or whatever the drive letter may be but with WIn98 I seem to have all sorts of problems. WIN98 detects it and asks for drivers. I have a disc that came with the device that has various drivers on it but I have tried them all and I cannot manage to see this device as an extra drive. In the taskbar I have the USB icon with the green arrow that I can right click and "Stop the device" but thats it.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
I am unable to see the device in the device manager as I cannot open the system properties icon in the CP. I get an error message about rundll32.dll is missing or something like that. Which is the reason why I want to get the usb drive working so I can back up some data and re-install Windows. Should I perhaps just do a re-install over the top anyway first? I have never managed to lose data in the past by doing this. |

Sometimes you need to install drivers BEFORE plugging in a USB device. Make sure you used the correct order of which came first. You may need to uninstall device, and reinstall drivers (using correct order).
With W98 you can reinstall over itself without losing data most of the time as you have said, so if all else fails I would try that to clear up any windows problem and then try to add device.

Think about upgrading. Win98 is really crappy with USB devices.
Did you read the intruct. manual |

Have you checked the manufacturer's web-page for win98 drivers? They may not have been available when your drive was shipped.
Win 98 works fine with USB devices provided you install the right drivers. |

Okay I updated this pc to win98se. I downloaded the latest drivers and installed them first. Then I plugged in the usb device which it detected and automatically installed software for it. It shows as usb mass storage device in the device manager and I have the gene usb monitor icon in the systray with the green arrrow. However I cannot see my drive anywhere in my computer like I would if this were winXP. How can I fix this so I can see the drive? |

Do you happen to have Tweakui installed? If so, it might not be allowing you to see the drive.

had the same problem with a friend's old computer. For some reason the drivers that came on the CD didnt' work, so I figured it might be something else. I ended up at this site: https://iomega-na-en.custhelp.com/cg..._lva=500&p_li=
If you've got some spare time this site may help. |
