| Loading Windows from Old Disks
Having just built my new system I went to load windows and realized that I only have the upgrade version of XP. I need an earlier version of windows to make the upgrade work. I don't have that. What I do have is a full version of Windows XP Pro that came with my parent's gateway PC. Will this work or are there some Widows activation issues or gateway issues that will prevent this disk from running properly on my home-build system? Please advise.
Best,
Kevin |

If it's a stand alone version of XP Pro, you're good to go. |

With XP home upgrade asked for the win 98 disc before it would install XP.
I think any win98 or ME disc will work. |

Just to clarify: if you can come up with an earlier version of Windows, like Win98 or WinME all you have to do is insert the disk for a few seconds when asked by the XP installation. You don't have to install the earlier version. Maybe just borrow one from a friend?

A restore cd will definitely not work because it runs a hardware probe. If it does not recognize the hardware it was designed for then it will not let you install anything.
Windows XP upgrades can work with 98, ME, and 2000. However I doubt it actually uses any of their software because XP is not 9x-based.
