My computer is making odd noises

Here is my problem:

I turn on my Dell XPS, and it makes a noise like a woodpecker tapping on my window repeatedly for almost 3-5 minutes. It's almost like it's trying it's hardest to start up and for some reason it just run fast enough...but then...
All of a sudden, it works fine, runs smoothly, and quiet.

If I shut it down, and leave it off for 5 minutes, then turn it on, it sounds like a freaking tornado about ready to tear my head off.

I swear one of these times, a demon is gonna come out and rip me to shreds.

I was thinking, it could overclocking, bad fan, what?

Please tell me what might be the problem, and how to check what might be the problem, and how to fix this?

off hand it sounds like a fan going bad.

Though it could be the CD ROM or even the hard drive.

well how could i know? what could i do to check it out? if i opened up my computer, how could i tell?

well put you head where the components are, but from the outside of the case of course
listen through the case for the loudest place
it sounds crazy but it works
