I'm no windows "expert" but I will try the best I can

Is this a new computer? It seems like a bad installation of the windows Operating System. So a repair install "should" fix your problem.

    One Easy Solution

I resolved this problem in another instance. Anytime I tried to use cmd.exe from Windows XP Pro, I'd get an error similar to this. I found that Notron Anti-virus did not catch a cmd.com file some enterprising script-kiddie had slipped into my machine. Ping wouldn't work either. Similarly, deleting the "hidden" ping.com allowed Windows to use ping.exe. Tracert also failed with this error. Sure enough, I found tracert.com hidden and deleted it. Then tracert.exe worked fine.

In Windows, "com" files are executed before "exe" files. This was being exploited. I did a search of my entire system and found 14 other hidden com files with exact exe counterparts. Of course, I couldn't run those commands until I removed the com files and allowed the exe files to work.

Now, all is back to normal.

    Unhappy Did just the job

Thanks for the insite into the .COM files. I found numerous in my \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory including:-

    cmd
    command
    netstat
    ping
    regedit
    taskkill
    tasklist
    tracert

& a file dated the same as bszip.dll

So I did to this as I did unto others. KILLED IT!

No these things work fine again ... for the time being at least!

Its a WORM so Mr Carefull has, over the past 30yrs of IT has finally been caught out by the Kids!!!

The important file is bszip.dll in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 - check out the internet for further detail.

    Ciao

    NTVDDM CPU illegal instruction???????

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
    CS: 04c3 IP:3937 OP:c71c 9d 37 00
Choose Close to terminate the application
When you click Close, you may receive several similar error messages.

This behavior can occur if you use an incorrect version of the Command.com file. For example, this issue is known to occur if you use a Command.com file included in Microsoft Windows 95, dated 7/11/95.

To resolve this issue, replace the Command.com file in the Windows\System32 folder or Winnt\System32 with the same file from another computer that is running Windows NT Workstation 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0, and then make sure that there are no Command.com files dated 7/11/95 on the computer. You can also replace the Command.com file on the computer with the same file on the Windows NT installation CD-ROM.

    Or
You can run a different copy of windows xp on your computer (do not re-install) , just run it and explore disc , go ahead and find command.com file in the disc ,, if not able to find manually ,, control+F will help you search through the disc ,,, once found replace the existing command.com file with the new one... it ll work.... cheers...

Same Problem as others... only on Vista Laptop

I'm using Compaq Laptop 6000 series with original Vista Home with all available SP's installed, MS Office 2007 etc. Even though I'm not talking about a PC, my problem matches the others posted here. I've had only 2 viruses quarentined since putting this computer in use several years ago.

I had a slow boot problem and downloaded a registery cleaner utility from Glary Utilities through CNet downloads. Used once--worked great. Used second time: My computer is now very slow to boot again. At Windows opening, it sets for over a minute with desktop color background before icons appear. Also programs opening very slowly. And when I first boot up,I get this error message: first the DOS black window opens and then comes this error message in a separate box:

    ------------------------------------------------------------
    C:\users\admin\appdata\roaming\MICROS~1\INSTAL~1\{ 8270F~1\_F5788~1.EXE
the NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:1210IP:1bb OP:ff ff OO ff OO
Choose close to terminate the application.
(followed by these two buttons at the bottom) CLOSE or IGNORE
    ------------------------------------------------------------

I mostly choose CLOSE but I have tried IGNORE twice and it just pings with no other visable result. I can't see that CLOSE does anything beside close the error window and the DOS black window.

However, now I'm back to slow-working laptop. I have downloaded and run TREND Micro's free HouseCall virus and spyware finder but it showed no viruses, trogens, worms, adware, etc. I've run a complete scan with my purchased and constantly updated ZoneAlarm security with same result.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Great website for tech support.

i have problem like yours and i solve it....
    open your firewall settings and
    1. click "allow a program or features through windows firewall"
    2. allow another program
3.add cabal.exe and update inside cabal folder....
