| USB internal card reader problem
Thanks in advance to those that reply. I have been trying to figure out why my girlfriend's computers internal card reader started causing windows error messages. Everytime I boot up the computer I gert the message "there is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive." at which point I have to select continue 8 times (for each of the different types of cards it reads). Besides that the reader works fine. I'm just trying to work out the bug. If I leave a Memory Stick in the reader I only get the error message 6 times (each of the 4 slots can read 2 different cards). Is there a way to keep the computer from accessing the card reader until I put a memory card in it?
By the way I tried downloading the drivers but they just dont want to take. The device is using the microsoft drivers.
Thanks again.
The PC is a HP a265c desktop.
2.8 P4 HT
ASUS built motherboard with 865 chipset
512 PC2700
FX5200 video card
no modifications or add ons... |

The card is in a PCI slot right? Or is it one that looks like a floppy, and plugs into a USB header?
Well if they won't take, then you are trying (probably) to load the wrong drivers. Did it come with an install cd?
Try uninstalling, then when the "new hardware" prompt starts doing its thing, select, "no I will choose my hardware from a list" then try to install from the CD that way. Don't let MS install drivers for you since they are wrong.
Also, does the card maker have any tech support?

The Card reader plugs into the motherboard USB header. When it is plugged in it is automatically recognized and installs using microsoft drivers. I went to HP and downloaded the original drivers. When I run the install program it opens my device manager and comes up with a message telling me that the drivers have been downloaded to "C:/HP/Drivers/Cardreader" and that I should click on the disk drive (there are 4 that now show as generic disk drives) and select updater driver. I try this and it tells me that there are no drivers in the folder. I opened up the folder and sure enough there is no INF file anywhere. This is the original cardreader that came with the computer. I dont want to have to use the system recovery if I dont have to. Again the card reader works when I put a memory card in it, but when the computer starts up and windows loads the no disk message pops up 8 times.
Thanks for the reply! |

Make a file called: "C:/HP/Drivers/Cardreader" and either install them there or paste them there.
Is the HP file an .exe file?
When you click on it it should give you a destination of where the files are headed. Have you done a search for *cardreader.* in "find"?
edit: one more thing. Get the restore disks and open them (not run them) and look for a cardreader folder. Maybe you can reinstall from there. |

That's not a drivers problem. The card reader is apparently working, but SOME software is trying to access it blindly. Suspect #1: Virus scanners that have been set to "scan all drives". |

I think Peter M might have it figured out. I'll try the settings in the spyware program. As far as the driver issue, I've already found the folder that is created from the executable file but there is no inf file.
Thanks
