    Memory gone haywire?!

Ok out of nowhere, no programs running my computers light began to blick when its "thinking". No progs are running and havent for a while (10mins). So I open the task manager and the page file memory is low ( thats good) but cpu usage is fluxing between 20% and 80%. then i go to processes and mcaffe is using an unusual ammount. so I unistall and restart it (i have avgfree wich is 1000times better) then all is god for about 2 mins then I open task manager again and SVCHOST.exe is taking more and more memory. starts at 7000 then goes to over 40000. and its still doing it as of now. Though, i have automatic windows updates enables but i havent given it the OK to install them. Also I have WinXP Dell Dimension 2400, 256mb ram P4 2.6ghz or something around there. PLease help its driving me crazy and running my apps Ultra slow.

Are you sure your AVG wasn't doing a scheduled scan?

Yes AVG wasnt leeching memory, it was Svchost.exe wich i belive is a system process.

Yes, I just had my AVG run a scheduled scan, and SVCHOST was not involved. I think I would look in Run/type in msconfig and see what programs you have starting.

You could also download hijackThis and see what you have going on under the hood.

Maybe that spike in activity was Microsoft scanning your computer for updates? Is it still happening?

WARNING: There are viruses circulating in the internet which uses the same name as svchost.exe. The legit svchost.exe will be present in the %Windir%\System32 folder.
