Ok, a buddy of mine has called on me to fix his laptop...
It boots BIOS but it promptly asks for a password... No password was ever put into place by user.
Before it asks for a password it goes through normal routine, like it will say press F2 for setup, ESC to change Boot Configuration, and F12 for something else. But when I hit any of those keys it still asks for a password. Most likely a nasty virus, he never runs an antispyware or antivirus, has AOL and frequently visits the perno sites. So Im guessing its a virus...

I don't think that there is any virus that really can change a bios password. I don't know about laptops, but in destops there is a jumper on the mobo that can be shorted to reset the password. |

before the welcome screen or any xp machine it asks for a password, Ive entered random letters and it says incorrect pass...then it asks for hdd pass, so I enter the wrong one again, and it says Hard Drive Locked.

When it is booting, checking RAM, all that good stuff. Start hitting ESC as quick as you can, that will overload the KB buffer if all goes well and let you at least boot up the os or whatever else, such as password resetting tools.
Ive had success with this on an IBM thinkpad, the ESC thing anyway. http://labmice.techtarget.com/articles/BIOS_hack.htm |

looks like you have a hard drive password..compaq called it "drivelock"
the manual for a compaq armada 1750 is here http://h200005.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/s...03_rev3_us.pdf
you have to scroll down to like page 13-17 ish to read about the drivelock passwords etc
but I imagine you will have to change the master password first....not sure though
try this when booting....press the "fn" key and then press f11 repeatedly...that was the solution that took me many hrs to find to reset my password |
