Maxtor 5000DV external hard drive not working

I've had this thing for a couple years and no problem then out of the blue it goes kuput. Is there any way to fix this?It's a usb connecting Windows what let me mount the hard drive. It shows up in the hardware devices,but I can't connect to it. I was trying to run spin doctor to fix it but since windows does'nt mount it I can't run it. Any suggestions?Thanks

Uhh...sounds like the hard drive is dead.

I'm not familiar with external drives that aren't of the roll-your-own variety, but you might try seeing if you can unscrew the case and pull out the drive, then stick it in your PC.
