| Not shutting down
Win XP won't shut down from windows. When I attempt a shut-down, the screen flickers like it's going to, but it's as if I didn't perform the task. This isn't my cumputer, it's a freinds. But I've had this problem with other units, I just can't remember how I fixed it, or if I even did. Any ideas why it won't shut down, anyone ? |

Probably bad drivers, make sure they're all up-to-date |

Windows update has been completed. Think he's using sp2 at least. Unit is HPa410E, if that helps. I've not done much work with HP's myself. I'm a DIY-er.
Could it be hardware-related, i.e. bad mobo, ? |

It may be bad mobo. If you can find the Brand and Model of the mobo, go to their site and see if there is a patch or updated driver for it. Test the power supply aswell... |

Check your system logs first. There might be a program locking up when you try to shutdown.

Check to make sure that no programs are running when you are trying to shutdown. Once you isolate the program, if that turns out to be the problem, you can figure out why it is cause the lockup and no allowing the shutdown to complete. |

There aren't any programs running, that I can see. Hey, Blitzkid, what do I look for on the system log? |

It won't do anything after I "Turn off". It acts as if the command wasn't even given. |

Open up Event Viewer by going to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer.
You should see 3 logs called Application, Security, System.
Right as you click on shut down, go through those 3 logs and see if anything comes up as an error. |
