HELP Forwarding port??

Im on a school internet connection and bittorrent and other downloaders (mIRC) do not work very fast. I read a ton about it and found I need to forward the bittorrent ports. I was wondering how would I do this. I have access to a ssh server if that helps. I kinda think I need to use that.

you need access to whatever they have setup at the school and im pretty sure they wont be opening ports for you for torrents and IRC

Also im pretty sure finding a way around it will get you caught and kicked off the network, now i know you dont want that do you?
