I am a gamer and my latest crazed is Battlefield 2. I am running into issues with the game quitting to desktop and sometimes I get a BSOD.
My system specs are: (Nothing is overclocked)
Abit NF7 Mobo
AMD XP 2700+
1 Gig of Crucial PC2700
BFG 6800 OC
Soundblaster live 5.1 xgamer
Enlight case with 300w power supply w/ 2 case fans
CDRW
HDD 40gig Western Digital 7200rpm
FDD
I have defragged my HD, I have tested the memory with memtest 86, I have made sure I have all the latest drivers as well. Is there a way to test and make sure my power supply can handle the load I have on it? Any other ideas of where my problem might be?
I cannot be sure but I dont want to point the blame at the game just yet. I was playing World of Warcaft and I would get lockups infrequently and crashes as well.
Edit:
Also in the manual they recommended quitting all background processes under my user name except Taskmanager.exe and Explorer.exe. I always run the game with the way they recommend. The only other application I run while I play sometimes is Teamspeak, but it crashes whether this application is running or not.

Doesn't Nvidia recommend at least a 350W PSU for the GF 6800? Check your docs. The minimum PSU should be listed. |

I would say a 300 watt PS is low. And most gerneric brand PS aren't that good anyway. BTW you do have the power suppy hooked to the video card right? |

again i say the PSU is too weak... BF2 is a very very resource hogging game...

It could very well be the PSU in this case. As vikeor mentioned, BF2 is incredibly resource hungry. It is CPU, GPU, and Memory intensive. When I run the game, my power consumption goes up by nearly 100 watts over idle (as indicated by the readout on my power strip)
With the exception of your video card, your system doesn't seem to be too power hungry so your problem could also be a heat issue. What you could do is take side panel off and have a house fan blowing right into the case and start up your game. See if the games run longer before they crash or if it stops crashing all together. Try to keep the air as far away from the PSU as possible because its possible that the PSU is getting too hot thus reducing its power output. If that is the case, you don't want to accidently cure the problem by keeping it cool, instead you'll want to just get a more powerfull replacement.

Here is a link to my video card and they recommend a minimum 300W power supply. |
