| Internet Explorer falls over when it loads a page
Have a laptop running WIndows XP Home and when I bring up Internet Explorer it shows a Google screen then if you give it something to find it shows the little green bars - then just when it should display the page it goes away completely. Opera works. Other symptoms are : clicking on the control panel Services icon produces an empty screen then goes away.
I have swept the laptop for viruses, run chkdsk and reloaded Window XP for the CD. It still does it. I have also bought a Mac from ebay in rather rash frustration.
Any fellow sufferers out there who have solved this one? |

You have the solution, already. Use Opera.

Blazer, if there is spyware on the machine messing up IE he will still want to remove it.
I suggest downloading Spybot and adware and scan your computer.
Cant go wrong with running hijackthis too |

Have been away for the weekend. Thanks a lot for the replies.
+ Have tried setting IE to the defaults - same thing.
+ Have run Hijack this and all the processes are good although I could weed a few out.
+ If I bring up a bookmark the same thing happens - as it does when I click the Reload button on the IE.
+ If I bring up the Services window which uses MMC (Microsoft Management Console) it does the same thing, looks as though it's going to load a page.... Then goes away completely! The event viewer works.
+ Am just downloading Spybot.
Tell me, are any of the ErrorDoctor, PC Clinic etc. programs any good? Searching Google I couldn't find any reviews or worthwhile comments on them - just loads of exhortations to join the affiliate programs, indicating perhaps a rather too strong commercial bias. One that gave a six week guarantee was very short on contact details (there were none) if you were not satisfied. That said, if they do work then I'm all for getting one - it would be useful to have other people's experiences before spending.
Blazer - I use Opera all the time but I am making a web shop and have to have Internet Explorer, also the problem neds to be fixed as it is effecting the operating system (?!). I dispair of the massive waste of mankind's time and the trgic narrowing of the computing arena brought about by Microsoft's ruthless business pratices.... Perhaps the next release will be stable..... .... .... This has been going on for the last 25 years since PCDOS 1.0. I rather hoped that BeOS, a very nice operating system would go somewhere but alas the company folded and development stopped.

Am getting close to the solution to the problem. When the machine started up it kept trying to update Office and was whinging about not being able to find PROPLUS.MSI. Well I couldn't find it either so I just pressed cancel, irritating but all well and good. It seems that the Norton Antivirus (spit) had decided to suspend some part of the supposed update and then the services window wouldn't load, search window was just blank, the internet explorer went away and heavens knows what else. By removing the NAV things are working properly again. Halfway through removing the NAV it mentioned that it had suspended some of the files involved in an unsuccessful update and did I want to revert to the previous state. Answering Yes and restarting the machine did the trick.
I have always regarded anti-virus programs with suspicion and they have caused me greif in the past. The only one that doesn't and seems to work well is Kaspersky. I have now downloaded PROPLUS.MSI from billynda.com (for those of a sensitive disposition, it is a very straight computer technician site, at least during the day) and am going to try and get rid of the update attempt when the XP loads.
How an application update can start to take apart peices of the Operating System defies belief and points to some very questionable software design. Still maybe it will all be fixed in the next release ...........
Thanks for the hand holding,
Kind Regards,
Andrew Parsons. |
