    CPU Toast..Need Reccomendation

My home built of about 4 years was starting to act flakey. Last night, it was just DEAD. Opened up the case, turned it on and was listtening to see if hard drive was running when I looked at the CPU fan...it WASN'T running!

I want to keep this PC and I'm having problems finding a replacement CPU...P4, socket 478 I believe, 1.5 to 1.7 GHz. Sounds like a good time for a mobo/cpu upgrade, but I'm not up-to-date as I used to be.

Current board is Intel 850GB and is still fine (I think, green light is still on!) Graphics card is ATI All in One and suits us fine. CD-R and DVD burner, Antec tower case.

    Options:

Search for replacement CPU and fan (probably $100)
Just get new mobo/cpu (max spending $150)

    Will take any reccomendations!

    Thanks

If you aren't doing any gaming and just using it for the basics then as long as you know the mobo still works, I would just swap it out for a new cpu.

here is a place to buy a socket 478 P4 2.4ghz processor, although if you go through newegg you may see a little difference in price (maybe a couple dollars) this is free 2nd day shipping, which i know is fast

Well for the money, you could get more out of it by going AMD...
What type and speed is the memory?

i looked at the chip prices on AMD's right now, and a decent chip will cost him like $130, its the XP-2800, and then you have to think about a board, although not that much he'll still be under $200 im not sure if he wants to spend that.

MSI KM4M-V (sorry i couldnt find the ABIT NF-7, the one i have on my xp2800 setup)

that will keep you under $200 and will perform better than what you have now, by far

seems the most he wants to spend is 150. So that is going to be harder to get a decent mobo/cpu combo.

yea i feel the same way, but dont you think SoloCamo that with a XP2800 he'll see a good bit of performance, although hes gotta make sure the mem is transferable from the one to the other

    i850GB chipset...

You might want to confirm it's socket 478, might be s423.
Do you have RDRAM or DDR ram?

upon research it seems to me that it's rdram... Which is going to be another thing to replace if he goes for a new mobo.

just another suggestion... some mobo's, like mine, will shut down immediately if it senses that the cpu fan is not spinning. It's a protect the cpu thing.

Thanks guys, you are the best. I tried a new fan in case the one went bad and the onboard sensor wouldn't let it kick in...the CPU is toast for sure.

Yes, this 'ole board uses RAMBUS memory...forgot about that and having to replace the memory too. Crap!! Well, it WAS cutting edge at the time, but never took off for some reason.

Luckily, I'm computer crazy and had purchased a Dell 2.4 Celeron and free printer for $300 delivered. It was going to go out in our shop, but I just didn't have the heart to put that new computer out in that environment so I let my daughter use it for a while. Oh well, she loses now! LOL

I'll just put the HD from the toast box into the Dell 2400 and them maybe piece together a pc from the bad box when money is there. It really did have a decent life...4 years pretty much on 24x7. Gives me something to tinker with too!

Thanks again to the best forum on the planet!

    David

    Huge BUMP!

Got the Dell 2400 going with DVD Burner and the drive from the dead pc installed as slave.
I have a bunch of documents on \\Poseidon\Shared Documents THAT I CAN'T GET TO because the drive is not on the share network path anymore.

Any ideas how I get those documents??? I double-click on it and get "Unable to access network path".

Can you right click, choose properties and update the network path? I'm not very good with setting up file sharing.

As far as fixing your old pc, stratton computer has a 2.0ghz 400fsb P4 for $147. You could also go 2.6ghz 400fsb celeron for $98. They carry the 423 to 478 socket adaptor, if needed.

Ok you have your dead computers HD now installed in the Dell 2400... is that right?

    It's set-up as "slave" correct?

Does the Dell 2400 see the old HD you just installed as slave?

Does the Primary HD in the Dell 2400 use windows XP and is the primary HD file system NTFS?

Is the slave HD file system FAT32?

    Duffy...

    Yes
Yes, all data on the drive is visible (except that shared documents folder)
    Yes, both use NTFS
    No

You think I can rename the current pc to Poseidon (the dead pc's name) and then get on my laptop and try to access the share(s) that way?

can you or have you tried to view via DOS "C" prompt?

I'm thinking you can move/copy all files to 'nother directory.. mean folder in DOS mode.... i.e. "copy *.* C:\new" that's when you're in your shared folder/directory.
