how to replace or t retrieve my data

ok my lap top hard drive was just replaced my old one is still good just too small so with that said how can i retreave my emails ect and pictures , faverites ect from my old hard drive its a laptop. windows xp home

Does ur laptop have a burner or network port? Just curious. Any reason why you didn't back all that up first?
You'll need to connect the old HDD to something. Be it a desktop, other notebook or swap the HDDs back the way they were, back up what data you want and then swap them again. If you want to connect it to a desktop, you'll need an adapter.

will this work have my old hard drive in and new one hooked up to external usb to ide 2.5 adapter , what will the file and data transfer do fromt he microsoft one built into windows what will it transfer ect i guess i am asking never used it before .

I can't really help you with M$s File and Data xfer program. I've never used it. I just know where everything is. So do you have a CD burner in that laptop? If you do, just get a couple CD-Rs and save what you want on them. If no burner, do you have a network connection? If so, you can get hold of a crossover cable, hook up to another computer and temporarily save ur data on the other computer. Then swap lappy HDDs to new and retransfer.
