While on this subject, my 200GB hard drive shows capacity of 189 Gb. Is that normal to loose 11Gb after fromatting for winxp, I did use XPsp2 but I formatted the drive as if I had XPsp1 on Powermax (It is a maxtor drive).
Did I do it wrong. |

Did I do it wrong. | Yes, for example, I have two 80GB drives that both show up as 74.5GB, my 74GB SATA drive shows as 69.8GB or something, and my 160GB shows up as 140GB. |

So it appears to be a percentage of the optimum capacity, so the larger the drive the large the loss of potential space which occurs due to reformatting. |

formatting always takes space from the drive.
Think of a blank sheet of typing paper. Now, we want to convert this to usable paper we can write on, let's say college ruled paper. Well, that consists of margins and rows.
This template takes up space on the paper and now gives you less room to write on the entire sheet. This is like formatting.
And also, if you still have a limit problem, go to your manufacturers sire of your controller card or the site for your motherboard and download the latest IDE drivers for your controller. |

Did I do it wrong. | Drives from different manufacturers may also have different capacities. I had two 160gb Maxtor drives that I replaced with two 160gb Seagate drives since the Seagates have a 5 year warranty. Only after buying and installing the Seagate drives did I find out that they format out at 148.x gb each while the Maxtors formatted at 152.x gb. I lost about 4gb of storage space on each drive. Way to go Seagate.

Maybe it's because Disc Compression is turned on on the Maxtor (NTFS only) |

The drive is uncompressed. Unless you mean that there was some compession at the formatting process but would that not slow he speed of the drive.
