| Power On Fail, POST Fail.
Hiya,
My problem is that when I turn on my computer SOMETIMES, I don't get a signal to the monitor and I can hear the drive sounds clicking every 10 seconds like it keeps resetting and I don't get a POST either. Here's my working solution: Opening the case and pulling off the HSF and removing the CPU and replacing it and everything works the next time I boot up. That's gonna be a problem when I hand this comp off to my mom as I am expecting my new parts soon. Any working solutions? |

I am not sure I understand what you are saying. Are you saying this problem is intermittent? The clicking sound that your hard drive makes, if it is the hard drive making the sound, may be your hard drive saying bye-bye. Does the computer boot up at all, or just sometimes? See if you can download the diagnostic program for your hard drive, from the manufacturer. If you have another hard drive, try that, and see if the problem still exists.
You may want to check your memory too, by making sure the sticks are in tight. you can also download memtest86 and run that. http://www.memtest86.com/ Just follow the directions on the site, and you will probably need a floppy disk.
If you open your box, make sure you have the power cord removed from the power supply, and touch the metal on the case before touching anything inside the case. |

Drive clicking definitely doesn't sound good. A bad HD can give you problems. Try turning on your computer without the HD. It should at least POST if the HD was in fact causing the problem.
Since you're new parts are coming in soon, try swapping out that 350W Generic PSU with your new one and see if it fixes the problem. This sounds more like a PSU problem to me. |

I ran memtest, I do not get errors in one of my sticks, but I don't think that's the problem. Ok reexplantion:
SOMETIMES (not always) I will turn on comp and it will not POST. I hear drive clicking in the DVD drive and the HDD like my computer is restarting again and again. To fix the problem, I pull out the CPU and replace and all is good. |
