Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Scroll down to Messenger, right click on it and select Properties. Next to Startup type, select Disabled and under Service status, click the Stop button. Click Apply > OK and your good to go. |

disable the service, update to service pack 1, or run a firewall will stop this ( i suggest you update to service pack 1 or at least have a firewall running) |

thanks a lot guys! that did the trick!
now one more question. this computer is set up with multiple accounts (XP home edition) and all accounts have administrative privileges. with that said, i had a question regarding downloads in different accounts. i used to have media player version 9 which i loved, but one of the users like an idiot went and upgraded it to version 10 which i hate! this is the reason why i never upgraded to it. so now that this user upgraded it, it affected all of the users. is there a way to undo this? i know of system restore, but wouldn't that undo all of the service pack 1 downloads and the other configuration thing you guys just showed me? is there a way to make it so that if one user does something like install a new version of a program or download anything/install any kinda program, is there a way to set it up so that only that specific account is affected, and not the others?
thanks! |
