hpdvdwriter/cd writer stop reading dvd

I have a hp dvd/cd writer combo and the other day it stoped reading dvd's. It will read a cd rom and music cd's but when I but in a dvd it tells me to please inserted a disk into the drive. And the cd-rom drive doesn't work at all it says to insert a disk into the drive. Please help.

What burning/playing software are you using?

You could try uninstalling/reinstalling the program. If that doesn't fix the problem, is the drive still under warrenty? If so return it, if not it may be time for a new one.

You could also try cleaning the lens.
