    \Windows\System32\Config\System is missing or corrupt

     
    A friend's Averatec Laptop won't boot do to that file being missing or corrupt, due it being accidentally deleted. Is there a way to get that file back without formatting? Also, I don't know if she has a repair disk. Could I use any Windows XP disk to repair it?

    Yes. Boot with the Window XP disk by going into bios and switching booting sequence. Set the CD-ROM to first priority. Then when u boot in, press R for Repair. You are required to type in the administrator password. If u dont have one, just press enter. At the console prompt type the following commands in order.

    md tmp
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

    delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

    copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
    copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
    copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
    copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
    copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

    and Restart.

    I have struggled with this for 2 days now and hunted high and low for how to fix this very problem. None of the fixes I found worked. I found this forum in a google search. Your solution worked perfectly! Nightrise, you have a new fan!

    hi i have the same problem but my pc did not come with an xp disc, what should i do? should the hard drive contain the key code or something?

    You're going to need an XP CD for this. A restore CD won't work either.

    See if you can borrow a friends XP CD to fix your problem. That's what they meant by that question.

    I just went through this, and I used the restore disk that came with my HP Pavillion dv1000 (Great little laptop, but very hot). Everything's fine now, except for lost files (nurtz).

    i need help i did what you guys tol me download regcure and hit r when the screen shows \WINDOWS\SYSTEMS32\CONFIG\SYSTEM and now it still shows the same thing
    what can i do to stop this from happening...and i tried boring windows restore from another computer but that didn't work either...
