Hoping somebody can point out any pitfalls with respect to upgrading my dvd burner firmware. The manufacturers download site goes to great lengths warning that an upgrade not carried out by an advanced user could render the equipment useless. I am not an advanced user and therefore very wary!!!
I am sometimes having problems with the dvd equipment and have been advised to do the upgrade. Any assistance in not too technical terms if possible would be more than welcome.....Thanks!!!!!!! |

The biggest problem is that the update may fail rendering the drive useless. I have updated a few and have never had a problem. If your drive is already having major problems then you have little to lose.
What is the make and model of your drive and can you post a link to the page? |

Basically, they are just trying to avoid responsibility, in the event that you brick your equipment. Usually these firmware upgrades run okay, but there is a real chance that you will render the drive useless. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully. |

Thanks people for your replies. Just to clarify, I am not having major problems but occasional errors when burning. This is the advice I have been given -
"From the log file you sent, I believe that your DVD burner model is
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4120B. The present version of the firmware you have
is A102.
Please update to the updated version A117. Don't forget to shut down
completely your computer (not just a restart) after the installation of
the new firmware. This will allow the new firmware to install correctly".
Would you recommend I live with the occasional 'toaster' or go for the upgrade? My decision and responsibility but any informed advice would be great. |

If it was me, I would go ahead and upgrade. Make sure you follow the instructions. |

Upgrading will usually have the added benefit of making your drive work with more disc brands, and at their higher listed speeds. |
