You can manually start a "system restore" by choosing the second option by following the
instructions at:

if Windows is failing to load correctly. That is one method if not trying to press F8 upon the
startup of Windows to choose the "last known configuration that worked" option. If nether
effort sees results then the first option you posted would be the "install to repair" choice in
which only the essential system files are repaired/replaced leaving all other files and folders
intact. That can be used once. Try the F8 boot menu option first to see if that helps.
In any event the question to be asked here is what problems are you seeing where XP has
a need for repair. Are you able to boot Windows even partially? If the system locks after the
post tests are complete and you do not see Windows load it could be due to damage to the
master boot record. But a little more information will be needed before advice can be given
as to the problems you are seeing. These are the few basic steps mentioned here.
