SB Vibra128 PCI trash sound in XP with VIA board...

The soundcard SB Vibra128 PCI producing trash sound and mp3 playback is abnormal. In Winamp, a 2min 50sec song just completed in 12 secs. The mobo is a Abit VIA Apollo KT133A, and the sound card is using the XP driver from Creative. XP is just been setup.

The PC Spec:
Athlon TB 1.3Ghz
256 MB 133Mhz Ram
20 GB HDD.
Abit KT7A
SB Vibra128 PCI (Creative drivers)
nVidia GF2 MX400

What are other thing need to be updated? The Mobo drivers? If yes, what are the relevant drivers? Help me please because I'm not familiar with AMD boards.

The sound with Win98SE before is OK. XP is fresh install after format Win98

This is a known issue with Creative soundcards and VIA chipsets. Unfortunatley, there is no sure-fire fix. An nVidia video card can also factor into the problem.

Have you installed the VIA chipset drivers? This sometimes will fix this problem. If you have the option in your BIOS, try setting the PCI latency to 64.

Here's a few links that may help:

http://www.viahardware.com/686b_1.shtm

The VIA Forum is a good source of information and related articles on this issue:

http://forums.viaarena.com/

Note: some of the articles on the net refer to specific chipsets (such as 686b Southbridge) and claim that it only affects those chipsets but after weeks of working on this issue on my old setup it was discovered that this can happen on ANY Via chipset with ANY soundcard, something which VIA vehemently denies and refuses to acknowledge.

Creative blames VIA and VIA blames Creative... the consumer loses as neither company has come up with a working solution.

Good luck!
