Anybody have any quick fixes or ideas regarding a laptop display.
Seems a friend of mine had a bit of a snit with her laptop and gave it a right cross.
She tells me the display has been very dim since then.
It is a dell laptop. Any ideas? connections? display controls? another right cross? |

OUCH! My suggestion: Take an Anger Management class .
Is the display emitting any light at all? If not, she may have broken the backlight. They're replaceable, but you're gonna have to disassemble the laptop to get to it. You can also get entire LCD assemblies, but that's much more expensive.
Due to the complexity, I would just send it in to Dell for a repair quote. If it's more than a few hundred dollars, she's probably better off getting a new laptop. For someone with her temperment, I would recommend a ruggedized laptop, like a Panasonic Toughbook . |

When I was young I was dropped on my head and I've been very dim since then too.
I agree with DanU, if there's no light at all, then it's probably the backlight disconnected or broken. Can she see any light at all in a dark room? |

She said she could still see the screen but it was very dim.
I have not had a chance to boot it up yet to ascertain if there is any backlighting at all.
I am familiar with taking the keyboard side of a laptop apart but to repair a backlight do you have to take the LCD part apart ? |

Well, technically you don't take apart the LCD, but you do have to disassemble the lid of the laptop that contains the LCD... |
