| New Video Card Installation Not Working!!!
I'm trying to install a GeForce FX5500 PCI card into a newer computer that has onboard video. I disabled onboard video in the BIOS, the system started up fine and let me into Windows to install drivers. However, after the first reboot now it shows the black Windows XP loading screen, and then after that, when you would expect to see the welcome screen, the screen just goes black. The monitor doesn't turn off or anything, the screen just goes black.
Any advice? The system is a Dell Dimension, 2.4Ghz Celeron, 728MB RAM, 80gig HDD.

remove the new vid card and enable the on board vid and reboot
it should now be working with the onboard vid,
now unistall all the software and drivers for the onboard vid.
it should now be running in a basic display.
now turn of the computer and install the new vid card and boot up, go into the bios and disable the onboard vid.
reboot, now you should have the new vid card running in basic mode.
now install all the software and drivers for the new vid card and everything should be working fine.
any time you change video cards, you should remove all drivers and soft ware for the old one first, then place the new one in and install the new drivers. |

I don't know what BIOS settings you have. Is this PCI or AGP? If it's AGP and there is AGP setting setting in BIOS, make sure it is enabled (and yes, onboard disabled). You might remove and reseat the card in case it didn't seat correctly. You might post what brand / model card it is. |

Disable the onboard video in Device Manager
Shut down
Install new card
Boot, go to BIOS, disable onboard
You should get to Windows to install drivers for new card |

i kinda have the same problem. my onboard video plug got ripped off the back of my computer so i installed an older video card with like 4 or 8mb ram.well the first day it worked fine but the next day when i cut the computer on, rite after the windows xp screen goes off the screen goes black. in the bios i have it set to use the pci video card. i then tried to do a restore and everything went fine until i rebooted and again after the windows xp screen it goes black. do i need a newer video card with more ram on it say 32mb or 64mb? the computer is a compaq thats just over a year old |
