| Still stuck at loading screen.. HELP!!!
(Windows XP Professional)
This is the issue:
One night, I shut off my computer (I'm using my other computer right now) normally and the next day it wouldn't start up properly.
When I boot it up, it starts off as it always would until it reached the loading page (Black background, windows flag with the blue loading bar). Then the loading bar keeps on going and going and going. At first, I thought the computer was just being slow so I left it there. I returned like 2 hours later and it was STILL loading.
Then I restarted my computer a few times, normally, safe mode...EVERYTHING and the same problem occured! I even tried restoring the computer to an earlier check point but nothing helped. This isn't the first time it happened, I used to be able to fix it with a simple defrag. (and since I can't get pass the loading screen, I can't even do a "ckdsk /r") I'm really frustrated , please help! |

I would start by doing some basic diagnostic work. (BTW - I don't think disk fragmentation has anything to do with this at all.) First I would test my RAM (using memtest 386). If that passes all 8 tests I'd probably do a basic OS repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm. That should do no harm (you won't lose any files) and often fixes such problems. |

Darn . I don't think I can do that because I have no idea where I threw that disk.
But today when I tried to go into SafeMode to take out some files, my computer froze on me, I tried it several times but the same thing happens, it freezes at the black screen with the white writing:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System 32......
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System 32......
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System 32......
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System 32......
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System 32......
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System 32......
.................
I was planning to take out all the important files from that computer and use my other computer for the time being but now i cant even get into safe mode. Ahh. Please help. |

what you can do is always attach the hardrive as a slave to a different computer and just browse and copy all the files you need from your computer.
After that do some system diagnostic and windows repair sounds like a great idea

I'm not that great at computers, so how would I go about attaching the HD as a slave to another computer? |

You REALLY might want to get someone more knowledgable to help on this. However, it isn't very complicated. Assuming the drive is the more common older parallel ATA (PATA, also commonly called IDE), you can check the little jumpers on end of the drive to see if it is set to Master (there should be a guide on the drive). Basically, only two drives can be hooked up on one cable and they one needs to be set to "master" and the other to "slave" - or both should be set to "cable select" (which lets the cable specify which is which). The main boot drive is usually the master and you probably can add your funky drive as the slave. Boot and you should see your drive. There are MANY little things you can do (e.g., go to the command prompt and run chkdsk on that drive) to diagnose and fix the problem. BTW - you really NEED to keep your original CDs for times like this. |

So nice to browse onto this page and get some jerk talking down to someone in distress. Real bad advice too! This person is having a boot problem, pretty easy to fix, and you are having them take apart their computer and do the whole master/slave thing and just making things way complex for a simple fix!!!! Why don't YOU get more knowledgeable???
Windows troubleshooting help online has step by step ways of fixing this. You also should be able to talk to their help desk by simply calling and they can talk you through the problem. |
