Disk Boot Error, Insert System Disk and Press Enter

Hey all,

I just formatted my computer that had been running well for about a year. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 using an Asus A8N motherboard, WD Raptor hdd, and an AMD FX55 cpu. After installing XP, I was able to boot from my hdd and install any neccessary drivers etc. I then attempted to restart without the system disk in the drive, and got the error shown in the topic. Strangely, the system boots from the hdd fine as long as the disk is in the drive. The boot order is CDROM followed by HDD, with the correct drive set to first priority.

Please give me some ideas about how to proceed and/or what further information you will need to solve this problem.

Thanks.

Have you tried the HDD first then the CDROM for a boot order?

Just tried it...same problem.

Thanks for the reply, though. Is there some kind of configuration guide for the A8N BIOS somewhere? I have no idea what I'm doing. I seem to remember something like this happening before, and possibly messing with a boot.ini file or something called NTLDR...could have been completely unrelated, though.

Thanks for any help you can give.

The drive itself appears to be good, as does boot.ini. Does anyone have an idea what might cause this error?

Could be your MBR on your hard drive is messed up. Try booting with a win96SE boot floppy and typing fdisk /mbr at the prompt. This will recreate the MBR.

If all else fails you may have to reformat the drive (ie remove any existing partitions first) then reinstall windows.

Good luck.

Cheers
Mick

I was considering this until I decided to upgrade (flash I guess its called) my BIOS and restore all the default settings. After doing this, the problem went away; I guess it was something I set incorrectly.

Thanks for your help guys.
