Floppy drive acting foogy

My floppy drive will not open any files that are on them. After 15 secs, I get
"the disk in drive A is not formatted, would you like to format it now"? Which I clicked Yes on a disk and the format failed. "Windows cannot format this disk"
I assume that means its time for a new drive? This one is about 3-4 yrs old, I bought it new right out of the box.

Have you tried more than that 1 floppy?

You could google some troubleshooting for floppy drives
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000277.htm

or spend a couple bucks on a new one; but seriously, who still uses floppies.

Have you tried formating a floppy through command.exe? I did it (and it worked) when windows was too dumb to format it.

I think this is how I remember doing it:

Start>Run>"CMD.exe"

Type "format A:/" (without quotes, if A:/ is your floppy drive)

Then it should give you instructions on what to do.

Unless you specifically need a flopy drive for a boot disk, just get a flash drive. I have this one and love it:

Or for a cheaper one...

Floppies go bad all the time, I checked my old floppies (10 years old) and most of them are unreadable. My 2 copies of 3.1 are gone forever.
