    Exclamation Can't download anything!!!

    I have IE6 and my computer is Windows XP Home. Recently, I tried to recover the computer just a little to get it working faster but something went wrong, I had to call Emachines and they walked me through and i had to do a master recovery and my computer is like brand new again.

    But I downloaded the newest version of IE, IE7 Beta or something and I didn't stop to read all the complaints about it... but I had my fair share of problems and eventually uninstalled it. Now I can't download anything from the internet! A dialog box pops up in front of the downloader and says 'your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded.' I cant get anything and my patience is running short. I've tried a lot, from googling it, and resetting the security settings like it says but NOTHING has worked. I was ready to uninstall IE completely until I realized I would be digging a deeper hole.

    Can someone please help me?!?

    Your system sounds like because of "security settings", its not letting you download anything.

    What kind of PC protection do you have on your system? The supplied Windows XP firewall? Any anti-virus programs? (AVG, Avast!, Norton, McAfee, Panda, etc?) Try turning those off and see what happens.

    if he can't d/l anything that would be a pretty hard task to accomplish wouldn't it

    try running a repair on IE

    BTW: are you on the admin account for the computer or a limited user account?

    lol I just realized.

    Ok... it seems that as mjolnir1134, it probably is firewall or any "security" typed programs.

    I have tried to set my security settings to disable the "file download" and try to download something. It happens the same thing with what you said.
    A security alert window, saying "The current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded."

    Solution:
    You need to Enable the "File Download" option in Internet Options.
    To do this, from Internet Explorer or any internet browser, click on:
    Tools > Internet Options > Security (tab)

    In Web content zone, select Internet
    Click on "Custom level" and under "Download Options", choose "Enable" for "File Download"

    -------
    If it still doesn't work, maybe you can set all the (security settings) options to default.

    Below is the Default settings in Security Settings (for IE V.6)
    * ActiveX controls & plug-ins
    Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls: Disable
    Binary & script behaviors: Enable
    Download signed ActiveX controls: Prompt
    Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disable
    Initialize & scripts Activex...: Disable
    Run ActiveX controls & plug-ins: Enable
    Script ActiveX controls marked safe...: Enable

    * Downloads:
    Automatic prompting for file downloads: Disable (doesn't matter)
    File Download: Enable (it should be this one)
    Font Download: Enable

    * Miscellaneous:
    Access data sources...: Disable
    Allow META REFRESH: Enable
    Allow scripting of Internet...: Disable
    Allow script-initiated windows...: Disable
    Allow Web pages to use...: Prompt
    Display mixed content: Prompt
    Don't prompt for client...: Disable
    Drag and drop or copy...: Enable
    Installation of desktop items: Prompt
    Launching programs...: Prompt
    Navigate sub-frames: Enable
    Open files based on content...: Enable
    Software channel permissions: Medium safety
    Submit nonencrypted form data: Enable
    Use Pop-up Blocker: Disable
    Userdata persistence: Enable
    Web sites in less privileged web content...: Enable

    * Scripting
    Active scripting: Enable
    Allow paste operations: Enable
    Scripting of Java...: Enable

    * User Authentication
    Logon: Automatic logon only in Intranet zone

    =====

    Before you try the solution below, make sure you've tried the above, optimizing the security settings.

    From what I see, it's possible that some of the old IE files (that is the current IE you are using) may have been removed, when you uninstall the new IE V.7.

    Try to uninstall the current IE you are using. I've tried it in my Windows XP and it doesn't require any Windows installation CD to re-install it, so it will be safe.
    To uninstall the current IE:
    Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Component (over the left handside frame) > Uncheck "Internet Explorer" checkbox > click "Next"
    Then re-install it back the same way, but this time check the checkbox for Internet Explorer.

    okay i think i may have solved my problem.

    i tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE but that didn't work. Then I thought about an old Verio Cd I used long time ago and it had Netscape Communicator on it. It was REALLY outdated, no internet page showed right, but i used it to download AOL explorer and now I can download!!

    I always knew IE was no good....

    Thanks for the help everyone I appreciate it.

    Just wondering if you try changing the security settings in Internet Options. I was pretty sure that it is where the download problem comes from.
