I just built a computer for a friend it has a xp 3200 64bit processor a 300GB HDD 1GB of pc3200 memory. and a PCI ati x300 vidcard. So the problem is it randomly crashes like if i try to run a CD it will play part of the cd and then just lock up. I cant figure out why on earth it may be doing this. It's running xp with sp2 i believe....any thoughts? |

The brand also plays largely into that as well do you know what it says as its 12v+ rail like how many amps (A) ? Now that it crashes when you try to play a game it definately sounds like a Power Supply issue, with it being not enough power for your computer. You may want to look into getting either an Antec or a FSP.... for now just post back with your specs if you can find them on the PSU |

that pwr supply should be decent enough for that system... i would assume the x300 video card doesn't take up that much "juice" from the pwr supply...
do you have all the latest drivers for your system components installed...?
MB drivers, video card drivers, etc etc...
also.. have you ran a program like "Everest" to see your actual voltage readings and temp. specs ...
it could be getting to hot...

i have no clue how it could be getting too hot. I guess I'll check it. I ran all of the drivers from the disks that came with the individual parts.... i also got a microsoft usb mouse too.....and im wondering if maybe that could be it.........cause right now the mobo is set to use the optimal settings....when i try the failsafe it doesnt catch the usb mouse.....so maybe there is a way to figure that out. anyone know what to do.....I'm thinking if i set my defaults to failsafe it will work... |

Is the RAM of good quality? Run memtest86 and see if it passes all tests.

You could also check to see if all the capacitors on the motherboard look aright. http://www.badcaps.net/ Check pics to see what i mean.
If you can switch out a quality PSU and see results.
Do the same with Ram as well.
And as stated, make sure ur temps are aright. Your CPU may be overheating due to improper installation of the Heatsink Fan.

We have pretty much covered all these. |
