Hard drive clicking sound

Hi all

My parents called me over because there computer won't boot. When I try to start it it gets to the Windows splash screen and then it freezes and the hard drive just keeps making a click sound. After awhile like 5-10 minutes it will ask to boot in safe or regular mode while the hard drive still keeps clicking. After awhile I just shut it down. I can get into dos on a boot disk, so I am guessing the drive is not totally done yet? THey told me they ran AVG and when AVG told them to reboot this happened? They are running Win ME . Any thoughts? Should I try to install Windows again?

That is known as the "click of death".

See if you can keep it (the HDD) running long enough to save their files asap, then replace the drive.

Et Oh. If I put this drive in another machine to try to get its contents off of it will it cause any problems?

I don't think ME will deny access to the My Documents folder when you slave the drive. You should be able to access their files. Programs and OS will need to be installed on the new drive from disk though. Good Luck!
