    HELP ME NTLDR is Compressed

I need help I was doing a system restore with the recovery disc. Its a gateway labtop Model # MX3225. I was wanting to go back to factory defaults, and now its saying NTLDR is compressed. I restart it with the disc nothing black screen is all I get with the NTLDR and some other options. Press R for recovery options tried that and did me no good. Other option is hit F11 to start recovery did that and nothing same thing as the R option. My recovery disc are good and clean no scratches. In fact gateway sent me a new one and it didn't help. No what do I do. Any help would be great
    Thanks

Using the recovery console and the ATTRIB -C command you can uncompress NTLDR.

Your command would be something like: ATTRIB -C C:\NTLDR typed in at the prompt.

How do you do that command. Is that a bios screen. Because my computer won't even get to start up. It just goes to the black screen.

See here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654 and here: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm some description.

Basically put the XP CD in and boot from that. At the first screen select Repair or Recover. Follow the prompts after that. When you get to the command prompt which will look something like C:\Windows try putting in what is in the post above.

BTW this is all from memory, if I were home I'd tell you exactly.

Did you review the two links in the post above? The first one explains how to get to the "Recovery Console" fairly well. If you didn't, here is the text from the 2nd link:

To start the computer and use the Recovery Console

    From the Setup CD-ROM

Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.
When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console. When prompted, type the Administrator password. At the system prompt, type Recovery Console commands; type help for a list of commands, or help commandname for help on a specific command.

To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit.

Somewhere in there while booting it will probably say "Press any key to boot from CD". At that point you should "press a key"

    tried to do that

I have the same problem with apparently a twist. When I press R to start the recovery console it tells me that setup did not find any hard disk drivers installed in your computer. And it gives me the option to quit....

    Suggestions?
