Why can't I use my SATA as my primary drive?

    Hi all,

This is basically a continuation of:

Dueling Hard Drives (XP and SATA vs IDE)

I'm posting again because the thread seems to have been forgotten about (although probably not by accident).

Anyway, I need to know why Windows won't let me use my SATA drive as the primary drive when there is an IDE drive installed. It absolutely requires that I write files to the IDE so that I can then boot from the SATA. I'll be swapping IDEs in and out. I don't want to be dependent on an IDE drive in order to use an SATA. I've checked all of my MASTER/SLAVE relationships and they appear to be correct. This problem has seriously got me baffled. Ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

(Edit: yes there's a typo in the title )

Probably you need to set in the Bios SATA as the first boot device, install windows and from there had the ide harddrives.

At windows install choose to add drivers and add the floppy from your motherboard to add the sata support.

I've actually done that, and tried two different mobos.

Wow. . .It appears that it's not enough to set the boot order, but I actually need to tell the BIOS not to use IDE1 *at all*. Windows, however, will still see the IDE drive but not require it for install. I'm installing as we speak (or type). I'll post updates if anything quality occurs. . .
