Mouse Inop in Thinkpad

My Thinkpad, i1200, 1161-62U with W2K will not recognize an external PS2 mouse.

The trackpoint works fine. Sometimes the mouse gets recognized in Safe Mode, but not consistently. According to the IBM documentation, there should be a menu item to set if the mouse is to be recognized automatically. I've looked everywhere IBM says to look and I cannot find the applicable menu item.

I have uninstalled and re-installed the track point. I have updated the driver and confirmed I have the latest version (according to IBM) and none of this helps.

Any suggestions out there?

go into you device manager, delete the ps/2 mouse driver, reboot with the mouse plugged in. If that doesn't work, try searching for a new ps/2 driver online.

I've tried disabling the ps2 mouse (and driver) and reinstalling. That doesn't help.

I recently loaded W2K on this ThinkPad and everything seems to be working fine except the external mouse. I think the problem is that the "switch" that disables the trackpoint is missing.

According to IBM (Lenovo) there should be an "automatic" or "autodisable" setting somewhere. This "somewhere" should be in the thinkpad configuration which is either under "thinkpad" or "IBM Access" or "Think Vantage" or in the BIOS. I have looked at all four places and I cannont find a disable function.

I have tried reloading the ThinkPad Utilities, checked to be sure I have the latest BIOS and none of this helps.

If I run Notebook Manager, the pointing device shows "Internal installed only" but I have not found a way to add an external mouse.

I must be missing something simple somewhere.
