Lately my computer has been acting strange. It will be slow at times and load programs up slowly. I have updated My windows xp recently, defragged, scanned for viruses, and scanned for spyware. I have also used registry mechanic to clean up the registry. I don't know what the problem with this computer is though, some programs will hang and load up minutes later. What would cause this? I'm on a pretty recent install of windows, about 3 months that is. Any help would be appreciated. Most drivers are up to date. |

have you ran memtest to check the memory? checked for possible heat issues? what processes are running when the slow downs occur? do you get a 100%cpu load? what programs are slowing down the system and what else is running?
we need a little more info

When the slowdown occurs there is no higher cpu usage than normal, which is the weird thing. I will try hijack this later on when I get back from work. |

Two things to try:
1) D/l and run the mfr's diagnostics for your hdrive. These symptoms could be related to hdrive in its initial stages of its death throes. Even if the drive is < 1 yr old, try it anyway. The server I built for the job was less than six mos old went its hdrive started dying ! (And people wonder why I'm not a fan of WD !)
2) You need to try another OS on that PC. It can't be a disc like Hiren's Boot CD or the UBCD. Here's one possibility or you could d/l a copy of Slax all by itself (KillBill Ed is a smaller d/l.) The idea here is that you'd try a completely stand-alone OS to exercise the entire PC, which eliminates bogus sware from the resident OS and isolate hdrive probs. Even though you've run a spyware scan, there is spyware/adware that doesn't show up sometimes. HAWKPE has a BartPE system which includes, among other things, a2Hijack (as in HijackThis) to permit dbl-checking your startup registry entries.
Both situs are pos, but I tend to favor #1. Good luck... |
