Slow computer, dumb computer, troubled computer, who knows!!
Hello,
I have just started my second topic and again it is need of help. This time it is my own computer not anyone elses. Well you see about a week ago or so I accidently went to this one website, **DELETED** and it showed up saying something about trusting the site and saying yes or no. (I use internet explorer) and I did indeed say yes because I don't know this site. Well it started downloading something and then quickly started over to installing. I didn't think much of it and found out the sites true purpose and left it to do other things. I was piled high with stuff that it took me two or so hours to find out that my desktop's icons were all gone. Well this had happened before so I restarted my computer and they were still gone. I did a full shut down and yet they were still gone. I thought it was probably the thing that downloaded itself so I did a restore. YOu know when you go into dos and put in scanreg/restore. Well I did for the previous day because I hadn't done anything. Well when I came back it was ungodly slow and stayed that way forever. I finally asked some people in yahoo chat and they said to check the control, alt, delete files and see if there were anything unusual open. I did find something by the name of "winoldap" and shut it down to see what it did. NOw I had never seen it before and I always do control, alt, delete to shut down things that aren't responding. My computer suddenly got faster and I had no more troubles. That was until I shut it down and the next day came back to do work. I found it again ungodly slow and did the control, alt, delete thing again and I again went faster. But this time I didn't stay like that for long. It came back. Well I did a virus scan and that didn't help and I also did msconfig, then went to startup tab to stop it from starting up. Well it wasn't there either. That is what it has been doing for a week and today I said this is enough. Well, when I said that all my icons left me again. Can you guys help me out and tell me what I should do?? I would really appreciate it.
SPECIFICATIONS OF COMP:
It is an IBM. An older version. Windows 98. I don't think there really are any other specifications expect to say that I used AVG Antivirus free edition to do the scanning.
Again thank you.

I don't know how confident you are at registry hacks, but I'll give you the way to do it anyway.
- Click Start>Run>regedit.
- Start expanding the tree on the left as follows... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>MICROSOFT>WINDOWS>CURR ENT_VERSION. Look in both the Run and RunServices folders by single-clicking on each folder (but not the "+" sign).
- Look for any entries in the right-hand window that have a String Value of the program that you want to get rid of, right-click on it and select Delete.
- After deleting the entry, click File>Exit. This should clear up the problem.

A couple of things. One I'm sorry, I didn't know that I wasn't supposed to put that site up. I really didn't mean to. Also, I tried looking in the entry and that didn't work. I can't find this program anywhere but annoying. I feel like formatting but I don't want to unless i have to. Again thank you for helping me.

Also look in HKCU>SOFTWARE>MICROSOFT>WINDOWS>CURRENT_VERSION. This contains user-specific startup programs.

you might want to do a format if you do not have a lot of expertise with regedit. It can be hard to get rid of a rouge program that is trying to take over your computer.
I have no idea what kind of site you were visiting, but some sites are very dangerous. They can steal your computer to do all kinds of things. Free software and porn sites can do that. You get your phone bill and it's for thousands of dollars for 900 number phone calls to Russia!
This could just be a botched install/uninstall.
You could try running msconfig and see what progams are being loaded. Post some screen shots perhaps of what is running, maybe with more info we can help you find out what is going on.

Thanks strangerstill, of forgot about checking Current_User, too.
HelpPlease, did you check in the registry for entries, check both the location that I gave, and the one from strangerstill. What did a tornado sound like before freight trains were invented?

Yes kuasimodem...I want to do a full format but I've installed things too many times. Do you think there is an easy way to get things from one computer to another?? One doesn't have the internet but it does have a burner and I could burn everything on a cd and format.
This is my sig :)

Oh, I almost forgot. I thought I would show you EVERYTHING that is running. I can't screen cap because I'm having trouble screen capping the end task program but here is the list of stuff on that is in the end task program right now. (to get to it I pushed control, alt, delete)
1. Explorer (I know it is supposed to be there, just saying them all)
2. Rnaapp (that has always been there)
3. Gbtask (I don't have a clue what this is)
4. Msmsgs (I think that is msn messanger)
5. Loadqm (I heard it may be for MSN messanger)
6. Confsvr (I think this has always been there)
7. Systray (No I do not know what this is. Just joking)
8. Wmexe (I'm sure this has always been here)
9. Winoldap (when I end it it keeps coming back but while it is gone my computer is normal speed.)
Now I'm gonna go see how to put screen cap's in my messages and get a msconfig screen capThis is my sig :)

Think its related to his ISP?Gearbox is essential software for service providers who want to manage the subscriber lifecycle over dialup, DSL, cable, wireless and satellite channels. Millions of subscribers have used Gearbox to get online. From dialup to broadband, Gearbox software's strategic configuration presents a comprehensive suite of tools that manages ongoing support and management. Gearbox is client-based, customizable software that resides on the subscriber's desktop and gives service providers the power to offer setup, support, portal and delivery services. By efficiently directing the subscriber management cycle, your business is poised to increase profit margins and reduce the time dedicated to subscriber management.Helicopters don't fly; they vibrate so much and make so much noise that the earth rejects them.

I think it is more likely related to Winoldap... search it on google once under newsgroups. There have been quite a few people having issues with it.

LoadPowerProfile only needs to load once, I always uncheck the first instance of it on the list. This doesn't seem to hurt performance at all. Just boots a bit quicker.
I also noticed that you have Seti starting twice. Don't know if that would be a problem, but you might want to uncheck one of them.
Still looking for information on how to get rid of Winoldap completely without a reformat.
Personally, I would disable that Gearbox program, it's worse than spyware, it actually allows your ISP to make changes to your computer!!!!!Key Features- Simple set up for either broadband, dialup or a combination of connections
- Automated Diagnostics
- Automatically corrects subscriber PC conflicts
- Automatic Desktop Configuration updating and remote provisioning Invasiveware?

- Remote Data collection and sophisticated reporting tools--SPYWARE!--
- Fully customizable online and offline portal
- Support for multiple brands and customer groups

Sounds like you will not NEED to format, if this is your problem.
It does sound like your system is a mess, I would at least uninstall a lot of that stuff and then reinstall. I am quick to do a complete format and rebuild as you will be amazed at how much faster you computer will run clean.
I reccomend downloading all the lastest drivers for you computer, I would not do it on your machine without running uptodate virus protection. Then I'd format an start over.
I would take out the hard drive and put it in the other computer to backup files (again virus protection required). Moving a hard drive is sometimes the easiest way to transfers lots of files.
Good Luck
