    usb ports stopped working completely

I finally fixed an overheating issue with my computer, and now this. I'm very upset. It was working fine this morning. I come home from work and all my usb devices are not detected. They are receiving power (external HD lights up, usb keyboard lights up, etc.) but they are not functioning with windows xp.

I came home from work today and my computer was frozen. Which was scary. Could it have been a power surge and fried the mobo? or could my power supply not be providing enough power? (its a 500w power supply and still supplying power to my gpu and the rest of my comp but it's a crappy brand.)

I've checked the bios, onboard usb is enabled.
    I've reinstalled mobo drivers...
And I've tried each and every port, theyre all dead.

    What are your specs?
What is the brand and Amperage of the +12V rail on the PSU?
Unplug ALL USB items and then reboot...
plug each item in individually until you have an issue...

    AMD 3800 X2 processor
    4 gigs of ram
    Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G Mobo
    Geforce 7900gt GPU
Power Star 600 W watt Dual Fan ATX PSU

i was wrong in the first post its 600w and theres 24amps. I hear powerstar is one of the frowned on psu's so I thought it could be that. But i'm confused because everything is lighting up...

But none of the ports work, ive tried each other, ive tried unplugging and rebooting, ive tried every usb device i have. they light up, but no detection

I've all of these (of the ones that apply) and none work. I've updated to sp2, installed usb 2.0 drivers, changed the allow the device to turn off to save power, etc.

    Try this...

I found this solution a month or so ago when the same thing happened to me. Shutdown your PC. Unplug it. This apparently clears any residual power on the motherboard. Leave it disconnected for a few minutes. Reconnect everything, boot up your PC and your USB ports and devices should be working again! Let me know if it works for you. Good luck!

This is happening to a friends machine (I brought it home to troubleshoot the problem).

    Motherboard is a gigabyte 8ik1100 I believe - (478 socket) with onboard usb 2.0.

About a week ago he said none of the usb devices were working anymore, which I've verified.

Re-installed the drivers from the manuf and microsoft -- disabled the ports in the bios and re-enabled them, etc. The devices are getting power (if i plug in my ipod it shows it as charging) however, it won't show up as a usb connected device. Also tested a usb mouse, usb thumb drive, etc. None get recognized.

All the ports exhibit the same behavior (it has 4 ports built-in with the ethernet/sound/etc connectors and 4 more you can use with external connectors that take a slot and an internal wire to connect to the motherboard.

After a few hours, I gave up. Wasn't worth the trouble of troubleshooting it any futher. Instead I just ordered an IO Gear PCI card that has 5 USB 2.0 ports for $20 bucks.

Microsofts device manager reports all the ports and hubs as active and working. So who knows. For $20 it's not worth screwing with anymore.

    Thumbs up USB Ports

Just thought I'd let you all know that unplugging power cord and leaving off for 30 seconds worked for me! Thanks for the tip abcjh4!

    Wink usb ports stopped working.............................

..........and I kept getting an error message "USB device not recognized" " Device is defecteive", etc. Spent all day trying to find the problem, and at 11:00 PM read the advice above. Figured I had nothing to lose, so I shut down, pulled the power cord on the computer for 30-40 seconds, fired up the computer, and the devices that gave me the errors before, work just fine now. I really don't know why, but I'll just accept it and go on my merry way.

I'm so glad I saw this response. I had seen the problem on countless forums, all leading to replacing motherboards etc.

I tried the power down, remove power cord for a few mins - AND IT WORKED!!! Thanks for posting your fix, or I wouldn't be typing this now.

    Nothing works

Well I've tried absolutely EVERYTHING listed here, INCLUDING the magic power down and unplug solution, and no dice. NONE of my USB ports will work, even though windows says that they are all working normally. Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers did nothing, disabling the selective suspend function did nothing, switching ports and devices did nothing. I suppose I'll have to get a new motherboard. A quick note that there was also some fan adjustments done recently, and added some RAM, but the problem didn't start until I tried to plug in a storage device.

Unplugged pc for one night; tried next morning... bingo! Back in business :-))

I have a usb mouse and keyboard, and since using the unpowering trick listed here, the only thing i get on my screen is BIOS saying CMOS reset, please press F1 or DEL... but i can't since my keyboard doesn't work! But now at least it lights up correctly.

Any adivce on how to fix it? I'm half considering buying a USB pci card, but somehow i think it will still not enable my kayboard in BIOS.
